Helping Mom and Dad Move
Helping your parents move is part logistics and part family conversation. Get help with the real estate side, whether you live nearby or across the country.
I’ve been through it in my own family, so I know how much it takes. I’m Eric Miller, a REALTOR® and Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®) with Real Broker, LLC, and I help families in Fargo-Moorhead handle the real estate side of a parent’s move.
How I Help Families
Respect your parent’s wishes
Your parent stays at the center of every decision. I share information with family members only with your parent’s permission or with whoever has legal authority to act for them.
Coordinate from a distance
Many adult children live out of town. I keep everyone updated in the way that works for your family, and I can handle on-site tasks like walkthroughs, contractor quotes, and showings.

Get the house ready without overdoing it
As a licensed home inspector, I’ll help you decide which repairs are worth making and which aren’t, so you don’t spend money that won’t come back.
Plan around the next home
Whether your parent is moving to a smaller home, closer to you, or into assisted living or long-term care, I’ll help line up the sale with the move.
Work with your family’s team
I’m glad to work alongside your parent’s attorney, financial advisor, and the senior living community.
Point you to local help
Movers, downsizing and organizing services, and estate sale companies can take a lot off your plate. I can share local options.
Common Questions
Can I sell my parent’s house if I have power of attorney?
Possibly. It depends on what the power of attorney document allows and on state rules. Talk with an attorney to confirm. Eric works with whoever has the legal authority to make decisions about the home.
How do we start the conversation with Mom or Dad?
Start with their goals, not the house: what they want their days to look like and what would make life easier. Many families find it helps to have a neutral person explain the options. Eric is happy to meet with your parent and family together.
What if my parent needs to move to assisted living or long-term care soon?
Eric can help you plan a sale timeline that fits the move date, including whether the home can be sold as-is and what it may need first.
Can the house be sold as-is?
Often, yes. Selling as-is can save time and effort, though it may affect the price. Eric can walk through the house and show you the trade-offs so your family can decide.
Do we have to clear out the whole house before selling?
Not always. Eric can help you decide what needs to happen before listing and point you to local services that help with sorting, moving, and estate sales.
Can you help if the home is in Minnesota and we live in North Dakota (or the other way around)?
Yes. Eric is licensed in both North Dakota and Minnesota.
